CC Newsletter 10 Sept - Horn of Africa Moving Rapidly Towards Famine, Millions Face Starvation
Dear Friend,
The greater part of the Horn of Africa region is seeing a steady worsening of hunger and starvation, as four years of rain failure have tasted the limits of the coping mechanisms of people. In Somalia, a country of around 16 million people, nearly 260,000 people are reported to have died in the famine of 2010-11. The international community was alerted to the serious threat at a very late stage then. This year there have been more warnings from the United Nations and other sources but nevertheless aid commitments are much lesser than actual needs.

Kiss the Amazon Goodbye?
by Robert Hunziker
As devastating as Trump (4 more years?) was for the environment, President Jair Bolsonaro’s MBGA or Make Brazil Great Again has one-upped Trump. He’s single-handedly
destroying the world’s largest rainforest. It may be the single most important ecosystem for the survival of Homo sapiens. As such, with such a big important target to ravage, Bolsonaro’s making Trump look weak.

‘Bharat Jodo’ Yatra and Idea of India
by Dr Ram Puniyani
Though the present Yatra is being led by a political party, the logic for social organizations associating with it are for the loftier goal of national unity. Even those groups differing with Congress politics at some points are whole heartedly associating with this exercise as they all recognise the need to combat the communal politics and its negative impact on the national unity
Bharat Jodo Yatra Can Contribute Much to Communal Harmony, National Integration and Understanding Real Needs of People
by Bharat Dogra
Several independent groups are very involved with issues like communal harmony but they may not have not had any opportunity to work with any wider, national level force. This yatra can provide an opportunity for linkages to be made among
various groups to take further the cause of communal harmony and national integration, much more than what can be achieved without such linkages.
Some Off The Cuff Remarks On “Bharat Jodo Yatra”
by Hiren Gohain
Rahul Gandhi’s bold new initiative has the potential to electrify the aggrieved and oppressed masses of India.Provided it is not a rehash of the ‘Karwain Mohabbat’ type march for spreading the gospel of love.In this divided and frustrated country where beneath the surface of patient suffering there is smouldering anger and resentment
Disposal of Railways’ surplus land- Legal implications
by E A S Sarma
I have come across a news report recently that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved a steep reduction in the annual rental for land leased to third parties by
the Railways from the existing 6% to 1.5% of the market value of the land, annual step-up in the rental from 7% to 6% and an extension of the validity period for the lease from the existing 30 years to 35 years, apparently with a view to encourage public-private partnerships (PPPs) in setting up cargo terminals etc.
