The Comey prosecution is a sham

Image
Dear Friend, Let’s not mince words: The Justice Department is currently operating as a state-sponsored revenge squad. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is essentially auditioning for a permanent job by turning the DOJ into a weapon. The department is prosecuting a man over a picture of seashells arranged to read "86 47."  Seashells . It’s a nakedly absurd claim that’s been witheringly dissected by  The New Republic . As we’re tracking Trump’s transformation of the Justice Department, TNR is also following Democratic leaders like Adam Schiff who are already working to "fascism-proof" our system—and fighting for protections that ensure no future authoritarian can ever do this again. But we can’t do this without your help.  Please, join today to help TNR keep the pressure on. Yes, I'll join! We cannot rely on "norms" to protect us from a lawless president hell-bent on revenge. We need to keep shining a light on this.  Subscribe today. Subscribe to ...

Why is the press protecting Trump?

Image
This weekend, after a deranged gunman unleashed chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the media did exactly what Donald Trump wanted: They blamed the Democrats. In an interview following the chaotic scene, CNN’s Dana Bash actually asked Representative Jamie Raskin if Democrats should "think twice" about their "heated rhetoric." It’s the same false balance that we’ve come to expect from cynical Beltway punditry, and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy of passivity. As  The New Republic ’s Greg Sargent puts it, there is no "Archimedean midpoint" between these two camps. On one side, you have Democrats criticizing policy. On the other, you have a man who calls the press the "enemy of the people" and has said his political enemies deserve to be shot. At  The New Republic,  we call out fascism when we see it. We don’t hide passivity behind bipartisan bromides. But we need your help to keep providing this aggressive, hard-hitting journa...

Trump’s War With Iran Is a Product of His Deep Stupidity

Image
Trump’s War With Iran Is a Product of His Deep Stupidity There’s a simple and obvious reason we’re in this mess.      This article first appeared in Power Mad, a weekly TNR newsletter authored by deputy editor Jason Linkins.  . What can be said about Trump’s war with Iran that isn’t already abundantly obvious? The answer: not much. It is not going well, and it probably won’t end well. But having spent time in the salt mines of Trump punditry, I can tell you that we’re going to endure a difficult round of think pieces purporting to explain How This Happened. So maybe this is the best time to assert the obvious, using  my favored rubric of Trump analysis : Imagine if the dumbest person in the world and humanity’s biggest asshole were the same person, and that guy was president. Then imagine he started a war with Iran. Now check the news. One look, and here’s what you should be thinking: “Yep, that tracks.” As with all of Trump’s presidential exploits, succe...
