Wednesday: Stand up for the future of the Voting Rights Act

  For decades, the far right has attempted to draw voting maps that silence Black, Brown, and multiracial communities. Right now, the Supreme Court is considering  Louisiana v. Callais  — yet another important case that could have far-reaching consequences for the right to fair and equal representation. We don’t know how the Court will rule in this case, but a ruling could potentially give states a green light to pass unfair, racially biased voting maps with little accountability. Gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act could allow state legislatures to redraw maps to dilute the voting power of communities and create 19 safe congressional seats for House Republicans. It’s enough to cement one-party control of the House for at least a generation.   Hi, it's Robert Garcia — the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.  I won’t sugarcoat it:  Right now, the Voting Rights Act — the cornerstone of American democracy — is under attack. Section 2 of the VRA outlaws racial discrimination in voting. It’s what ensures every voter — no matter their race, zip code, or background — has a fair shot at electing leaders who truly represent their communities. But extremist politicians are trying to gut it, paving the way for more gerrymandering, more voter suppression, and less representation for communities of color. The Supreme Court must protect the Voting Rights Act.  We cannot go back to an era where politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their representatives. We cannot allow decades of civil rights progress to be erased in a single court decision.
