  A not-very-friendly reminder: Donald Trump is refusing to sign legislation to build more housing and make housing more affordable. Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly passed a housing affordability bill in both the House and the Senate (when was the last time you heard that?). Why? He said he won’t sign unless Congress passes the SAVE Act first — the restrictive voter ID law that would make it harder for millions of citizens to vote. Why? Because he knows his agenda is unpopular and Republicans can’t win based on what he’s doing, so he wants to rig the election by picking his own voters. That’s what this is all about. Again, not an ordinary voter ID bill. Trump and the Republicans in Congress will defend it by saying things like, "You should have to show ID to vote just like you do to buy a beer."   One person, one vote   is the foundation   of a functioning democracy. Any effort to systematically make voting harder -- especially for millions of eligible citizens -- is a direct betrayal of that principle. Democracy depends on equal access to the ballot, but when barriers are erected, equality under the law begins to erode.  This is exactly what the so-called  “SAVE America” Act  does. By requiring a birth certificate or passport to register or vote, it places unnecessary and exclusionary hurdles between Americans and their most fundamental right to vote.
