It hit Washington, D.C. first leaving pungent echoes of racist narratives about urban crime. “President Donald Trump has taken control of D.C.’s law enforcement and ordered National Guard troops to deploy onto the streets of the nation’s capital, arguing the extraordinary moves are necessary to curb an urgent public safety crisis.” (PBS, August 12, 2025, written by Matt Brown). Even as district officials questioned the claims underlying his emergency declaration, the Republican president promised a “historic action to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse.” (Ibid) His rhetoric paraphrased that used by conservatives going back decades who have denounced cities with majority non-white populations or as lawless. In 2025, a new genocide commenced due to the atrocious and gruesome behavior of one man – Donald Trump. Despite the carnage in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Syria, and other nations and even in the face of the Trump administration’s apparent determination to dismantle what remains of the liberal international order, the human rights attorney Philippe Sands insists he is not giving in to despair.
