The Department of Homeland Security has concluded the detention center in the Everglades is too expensive to keep operating

The Department of Homeland Security has concluded the detention center in the Everglades is too expensive to keep operating https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2026/05/07/federal-and-state-officials-consider-closing-floridas-alligator-alcatraz/?share=ieosntn0lsswfddncaof . Florida is in talks with the Trump administration to shut down a high-profile immigration detention center that opened last summer in the Everglades and has cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars to operate, according to a federal official, a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, and a person close to the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis. The shutdown talks are preliminary, the people said. But officials at the Department of Homeland Security have concluded that it is too expensive to keep operating the center, known as Alligator Alcatraz. Homeland Security officials have also come to consider the center ineffective, the federal official said. All three people spoke on the condition of ano...

“People are dying in detention. ICE just does not care.”

MAKE 4X THE IMPACT TO STOP ATTACKS ON IMMIGRANTS » People are being tortured in immigration detention facilities — people who should never have been locked up in the first place 1 .  And I have witnessed the horrors myself. Our recent report details the brutal human rights violations at “Alligator Alcatraz” and Krome Detention Center: People are being chained to the ground, denied medical care, and held in cages with fecal matter seeping from toilets into where they are sleeping. Individuals shared stories with us of guards being violent (which I also witnessed). At Alligator Alcatraz, people are being thrown into  the ‘box’ , a 2x2-foot cage where people are shackled and unable to sit down or move, for hours, and without any water or protection from the sun. This is torture. It’s inhumane. It’s cruel. It’s illegal. And it must STOP. When we visited Krome, people yelled out to speak to us so we could tell the world what they’re facing inside Krome and what they fac...

Re: We’re ensuring the media and our elected officials can’t look away NUMBER OF ICE DETAINEES REACHES RECORD HIGH OF 66,000 ACCORDING TO DHS

This is getting out of control, and we need to do something: Remember: the administration wants you to think that 66,000 is nothing more than a number.  But we know the truth. Those are 66,000 lives interrupted in the pursuit of a divisive, xenophobic agenda by political leaders that are supposed to represent us. That’s 66,000 families facing separation. 66,000 futures held hostage.  66,000 American dreams on the brink of destruction. That’s why every Sunday for nearly five months, our allies at the Workers Circle have organized vigils outside of Alligator Alcatraz―a secretive ICE “black site” detention camp in the Florida Everglades―and we can help them keep the vigils going. In order to grow the numbers and continue to build momentum, the Workers Circle is renting weekly buses to help people from across the state attend these vigils.  But if they’re going to keep sending weekly buses, they need our help right now. Each bus costs $2,100 in rental fees, fuel, and a...
