The Substack Infiltration Nobody Is Talking About

The Substack Infiltration Nobody Is Talking About A warning about bots, fake accounts, paid rage-bait, and the coordinated effort to fracture the pro-democracy movement from within. Lev Parnas Jun 1 ∙ The Substack Infiltration Nobody Is Talking About There are moments when you can feel something shift. Not because one person attacks you. Not because one post goes viral. Not because a few trolls show up in the comments. But because the pattern becomes impossible to ignore. Over the past several months, through extensive sourcing, direct information coming to my attention, and patterns we have been carefully tracking, I believe something much bigger is happening here on Substack. And almost nobody is reporting on it. This platform — the place so many of us came to because we were tired of corporate media, tired of cable news spin, tired of algorithm-driven propaganda — is being targeted. Not just by ordinary trolls. Not just by people who disagree politically. I’m talking about something...

Report Details Big Oil Lobby's Relentless Opposition to a Green Transition

Report Details Big Oil Lobby's Relentless Opposition to a Green Transition Climate campaigners said the "brilliant and disturbing" publication "shows the crucial need for increased awareness of the delaying tactics of fossil fuel companies." Echoing years of  academic ,  congressional , and  journalistic  research, a U.K.-based think tank on Thursday released a  report  detailing how top fossil fuel industry trade groups have "used a playbook of narratives and arguments to systematically oppose, weaken, and delay the transition to renewables and electric vehicles (EVs) since at least 1967." The new InfluenceMap analysis focuses on the American Petroleum Institute (API), FuelsEurope, and Fuels Industry U.K.—whose spokespeople  responded  to the report by insisting to  SustainableViews  that the oil and gas industry is playing an "essential" role in the transition and it is necessary to harness "vast energy resources, from oil and n...

Hang on, Republicans: Who are the real "elites," anyway?

Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images Bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell recently posted some thoughts on the subject of high school sports, of all things. High schools do a good job at elevating elite athletes, he wrote, to the detriment of students of more average ability, or who lack parents who could afford to pay for soccer or baseball camps starting at age six. Gladwell, who is a lifelong, serious runner — and can run a mile at age 55 nearly as fast as I did when I was 15 and winning races on the track team — came up with a law he named after himself: In any sporting endeavor, elite achievement comes at the cost of mass participation. We can easily expand Gladwell's Law to the whole of soc...

How Russian trolls helped disrupt the Women's March against Trump

How Russian trolls helped disrupt the Women's March against Trump: "Accounts at the Internet Research Agency, an organization based in St. Petersburg, and controlled by an ally of Putin, had boasted of propelling Trump to victory. That year, the group's budget nearly doubled, according to internal communications made public by American prosecutors. Under these auspicious conditions, their goals shifted from electoral politics to something more general - the goal of deepening rifts in American society. The job was not to put forward arguments, but to prompt a visceral, emotional reaction, ideally one of 'indignation'. The task is to make a kind of explosion, to cause controversy. As the Women's March drew nearer, the Russian trolls tested different approaches on different audiences, as they had during the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. They posed as resentful trans women, poor women, and anti-abortion women. They dismissed the marchers as pawns of...

RSN: Andy Borowitz | Benedict Arnold Wishes He Had Had Special Master

Image
16 September 22 Dear Fellow RSN Readers, I recently received a modest financial windfall, and though I have no shortage of bills on which to spend those extra funds, I used a few of those dollars to supplement my monthly RSN contribution. I’m frustrated that this most extraordinary news organization has to struggle so for basic financial well-being. The entire readership loses when RSN has to devote resources to raise money instead of focusing on their mission. Surely most readers are in a position to give SOMETHING every month. Make it 20% of your cell phone bill. Half of what you spend on a dinner out. Some fraction of what you pay to stream movies. Just make it something. Looking forward to the day when RSN has enough monthly supporters to make fundraiser messages a thing of the past.
