The Decency Era is Over

Image
Jan 20, 2026 The Lincoln Project Podcast This week’s double-header episode confronts America’s moral crisis from two sides of the same coin: what happens when leadership becomes corrupt and power-hungry—and what it looks like when leaders choose decency instead. First, journalist Mary Clare Jalonick joins Rick to break down her urgent new book Storm at the Capitol, a chilling account of how ambition, radicalization, and moral cowardice led to January 6 and exposed what happens when power is severed from principle. Then, veteran political voice Chris Matthews offers a stark counterpoint with Letters from Bobby , drawing on Robert F. Kennedy’s words to remind us that leadership is a moral act rooted in restraint, empathy, and responsibility. This conversation couldn’t be more timely as ICE violence and aggressive enforcement tactics come to a head across the country, putting into sharp relief the real-world consequences of unchecked power and moral collapse. One episode. Two...

History Bends Toward Distortion When Accountability is Denied The Unstable State of Democracy Five Years After the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol Harry Dunn and MeidasTouch Network Jan 6   By Harry Dunn, Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer December 19, 2022, Washington, District of Columbia, USA: Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn listens to the committee on day ten of the United States House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol. January 6 Again Joyce Vance Jan 6 Donald Trump is the President no one has ever said “no” to in a big way. Not Congress, not the Court, and certainly not the people around him in the executive branch. It didn’t happen even after January 6, 2021 , which seems to have greenlit the fact-averse, law-free, and profoundly antidemocratic behavior that has come to characterize his second term in office. As Virginia Senator Mark Warner pointed out in  our Substack Live   earlier today, Trump fires intelligence analysts who don’t tell him what he wants to hear. Stop and think about what that means for a minute. Could that account for the horrific 80 deaths  preliminary numbers  say occurred so we could arrest two people in Venezuela? What else? Now, with the fifth anniversary of January 6 upon us, we live in a world where the president has pardoned the “ patriots ” convicted for planning an insurrection and storming the Capitol. Trump has made sure that no one faces accountab...
