All of the diseases we now have vaccines for were absolute scourges that tore through both domestic and global populations. When there were outbreaks, hospitals had "wards" - large gymnasium-like spaces with row after row of beds. People died from these diseases. Many suffered lifelong impairments. The outbreaks had immediate, serious economic impacts.
