Tell the Forest Service: Keep our national forests wild

Image
Our national forests hold some of our last pockets of nature, where trees grow uninterrupted as far as the eye can see. Yet these unbroken stands of trees could be carved apart and chopped down.   45 million acres of our national forests could lose protection. 1 You can defend our national forests from logging, mining and road-building.   Urge the Forest Service to keep  our national forests  wild. Beneath a canopy of needles and leaves, cool streams flow and wildlife flourish. America's wild forests are where we find hidden trails and swimming holes. They're where we go for fresh air and perspective, to reconnect with the natural world. But some would rather treat our wild forests like tree farms, cutting away acre after acre until the forest is just a shadow of its former glory. Last fall, more than 600,000 people told the Forest Service to continue protecting 45 million acres of our national forests. We got their attention with that outpouring of support fo...

Breaking: 2.5 million acres of Oregon forests on the chopping block

Image
Breaking news: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) just announced plans to dramatically increase logging on up to 2.5 million acres of public lands in Oregon, including some of the last remaining old-growth forests in the state. 1 This plan would be devastating for endangered species including coho salmon, spotted owls and marbled murrelets. Environment America is sounding the alarm and mobilizing grassroots action to protect Oregon's mature and old-growth forests. Will you make a donation to help us defend Oregon's old-growth and mature forests? America's old-growth forests provide essential habitat for thousands of wildlife species, clean drinking water sources for tens of millions of Americans and endless opportunities for recreation. 2 We visit our public forests every year to hike, fish and reconnect with nature. But the BLM's western Oregon forest plan could eliminate old-growth and wildlife protections in order to facilitate "maximum" logging capacity...

Tell Aramark: Plastic pollution is harming ocean life

Image
Every minute, plastic waste pours into our oceans, harming wildlife, contaminating the environment and polluting fragile marine ecosystems. A lot of this pollution comes from single-use plastic packaging -- bottles, wrappers, bags and other food containers designed to be used once and then thrown away. One potential source of this waste is large food service providers like  Aramark, which serves millions of meals at stadiums, arenas and museums across the country. That's why we're urging Aramark to lead the charge in lessening plastic pollution by cutting down on its single-use packaging.  Will you tell Aramark to reduce its plastic footprint today? Plastic pollution doesn't just affect individual species. It undermines the very health of the ocean. Each year, literal tons of plastic enter marine environments, where it can persist for decades or longer. 1 Once in the water, plastic breaks apart into smaller and smaller pieces, spreading through ocean currents and becomi...

Breaking: Senate committee just voted to put our forests on the chopping block

Image
A committee of U.S. senators just voted to fast-track a wave of reckless logging projects in our forests. The so-called "Fix Our Forests" Act won't fix anything -- it could put millions of acres of forests on the chopping block. It could also threaten endangered species by completely bypassing key environmental laws like the Endangered Species Act. We can't let this anti-forests bill pass the full U.S. Senate.  A similar version of the bill has already passed in the U.S. House. Will you donate now to help defend our forests from the misleadingly titled "Fix Our Forests" Act? We must act fast to stop this major attack on our forests. Even while the government is shut down, the U.S. Senate is working on moving bills like this one forward.   Today, a committee of senators approved their version of the "Fix Our Forests" Act --  but it still needs to be voted on by the full Senate. We still have a chance to save acres of trees from reckless logging. ...
