Whatever euphemism Trump and Hegseth opt to call our military misadventure in Iran, U.S. service members have died as a result of their hubris and their bloodlust. Nothing can undo that. Tomorrow is Memorial Day. It is particularly important this year to remember the origin of that holiday and what we are commanded to do to honor it. As General Logan wrote 16 decades ago, “All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders.” That number now includes those who lost their lives in the Middle East since February 28th.
