Congressional Republicans love to preach a “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality — until they’re talking to a billionaire. They love to champion an America that says “I’ve got mine, the rest of you are on your own” — but this doesn’t seem to apply to giant corporations who get government handouts. Take Trump and the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill, for example. Alphabet gets $17.9B in tax breaks. That money could pay for SNAP benefits for 7.5 million Americans. Amazon gets $15.7B. That could lower ACA premiums for 2.4 million people. Microsoft gets $12.5B. That could cover Medicaid for 3.8 million children. Oh, and we can’t forget how Trump was somehow able to dig up $40 billion to bail out Argentina’s far-right government. That $40 billion could have made child care affordable for 2 million American families. But for American families needing help? They say there’s no funding.
