The Pentagon dismantled its civilian protection mission as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made “lethality” a top priority and the Trump administration reorganized national security around two principles: more aggression, less accountability. Wives should submit to their husbands — oh, and not vote.

Warning — if you don’t want to be enraged to the point of seeing red, you might want to delete this email right now. Still reading? Here’s a headline for you: This pastor — who we’ve had the displeasure of discussing before, last time Pete Hegseth lifted up his twisted views — is our Defense Secretary’s (sorry,  War  Secretary’s) personal spiritual leader.  On top of his disturbing and shameful views on slavery — he actually describes himself as a “paleo-confederate” — this guy also thinks we should criminalize homosexuality, and he has a whole lot to say about women and our  role in society . Wives should submit to their husbands. The 19th Amendment should be repealed because granting women the right to vote was a “bad idea.”  To be extremely clear: My role in society isn’t to submit to a man. It’s to be a Member of Congress. And a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa. And a member of the Ho...

Press Onward To journalists everywhere: fight like hell Dan Rather and Team Steady Dec 29 October 1, 2025, New York City Credit: Getty Images As Benjamin Franklin was leaving Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a woman asked him what kind of government had been established. “A republic, if you can keep it,” he famously and presciently answered. A republic is a form of government in which power is held by the people, who elect representatives to exercise that power on their behalf. Our republic has survived civil war and world wars. It has withstood economic depressions and deadly pandemics. It has persevered in the face of scandals and political assassinations. For 238 years, the Constitution, buttressed by the rule of law, has been our bulwark against tyranny. But now we are faced with a cult leader-cum-authoritarian hell-bent on destroying it. As we look back on 2025, we’re hard-pressed to find a corner of society more tormented than th...

Here's the real threat to personal liberties and free markets

Here's the real threat to personal liberties and free markets Robert Reich Feb 28 Friends, Here’s an oped by Dana Millbank, an opinion writer for The Washington Post, which ran today in the Post. I hope Millbank continues to write opinion pieces for the Post because I’ve always found his opinions to be sharp and relevant. But given Jeff Bezos’s blatant attempt to turn the Post into a sycophantic suck-up outlet for Trump, I’m not sure. *** Over the last 48 hours, I’ve been receiving from readers and friends the sort of notes one gets upon losing a loved one, or perhaps receiving a terminal diagnosis. “So very sorry.” “Hang in there.” “Sending you love and strength.” “With appreciation and sorrow.” The cause of death? The belief that Post owner Jeff Bezos has  just ended the tradition  of open debate that has guided this paper’s editorial page for generations. “We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” Bezos...
