Honoring the Legacy of Selma

Image
This past weekend, Common Cause joined thousands in Selma, Alabama, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Selma Bridge Crossing—a moment that forever changed our democracy. We walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, retracing the steps of the brave marchers who, in 1965, risked their lives for the right to vote. We learned from civil rights leaders, discussing the urgent fight for voting rights today. And we gathered with our partners from the NAACP, honoring those who paved the way while recommitting ourselves to the work ahead. But this anniversary wasn’t just about remembering the past—it was a call to action.  Because six decades later, the fight for voting rights is far from over. Across the country, politicians are working to suppress votes and silence voices—pushing new laws that make it harder to vote, limit ballot access, and manipulate elections in their favor. That’s why Common Cause is fighting back in nearly two dozen states to defend and expand voting rights—beca...

Take Action: Don’t let Musk gut our government

Image
House Republicans narrowly passed their far-right funding bill  – which would undermine Medicaid and Social Security and do NOTHING to stop Trump and Musk's illegal cuts to our public services. [1] We must act NOW to demand the Senate reject any funding legislation that gives Musk and Trump a blank check to shut down any part of the government they don't like. Contact your senators >> TAKE ACTION It’s a simple demand:  when Elon Musk is already taking money out of your pocket to make billionaires like him richer, Congress needs to do whatever it takes to stop him. But instead of putting up guardrails to protect disaster relief, cancer research, and Social Security  – congressional Republicans want to write the worst parts of Musk’s slash-and-burn agenda into law.    The good news is, they can’t do that on their own.   They will need 7 Senate Democrats to sign on to pass this far-right bill into law. That makes this funding bill the most importa...

Have you seen our newest ad?

Image
After billionaire Jeff Bezos’s  Washington Post  refused to run our Fire Elon Musk ad with little to no explanation, we knew we needed another way to get this message out. So with your help, that’s what we did.  Starting this week, visitors to Times Square – the most popular tourist destination in the country – will see our billboard declaring  it’s time to Fire Elon Musk. This is the next step in our persistent advocacy, lobbying, and public messaging efforts to DEMAND a halt to Musk’s attacks on our Social Security, our national parks, and our democracy. Simply put, this is a hostile takeover of our democracy  – and we’re responding to it with the full fervor and concern it deserves. But we’re only able to do that because folks like you are stepping up like we’ve never seen before. Since we launched this campaign, we  collected over 500,000  petition signatures  opposing Musk’s involvement in government,   drove 9,155 calls and 42,98...

30 new Article V Convention bills in the new year

Image
We’re just two months into the new year and we’re already tracking 107 Article V Convention bills in 35 states across the country. And with only six states standing between you, me, and the Article V plot to gut our Constitution, we can't afford to lose any ground  – so we'll have to go all in to stop every single call for Article V this year with a powerful, multi-state response only Common Cause can deliver. You might have already seen my messages on the dangers of the Article V plot, but in case you haven’t here’s a quick recap: The Article V Convention is  a secretive plot funded by millions in right-wing dark money from the likes of the Kochs and Mercers. Their endgame? Give megadonors and corporations free rein to radically reshape our Constitution against the will of the people – writing far-right policy goals directly into our Constitution while gutting rights like free speech, the right to protest, and our right to privacy. The conspirators behind Article V alr...

Petition: Protect the USPS

Image
SIGN NOW: STOP Trump’s takeover of our Postal Service >> After years of pressure from thousands of Common Cause members like you, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is finally gone – but Trump’s takeover of the Postal Service is just starting. Trump is now reportedly plotting a COMPLETE partisan takeover of our independent Postal Service  [1] – defying the Constitution, which clearly gives Congress,  not  the President, authority over the USPS. [2] But we know the rules have never stopped Trump, who has long wanted to privatize this essential public service at the expense of millions of Americans who rely on the Postal Service for receiving medications, sending letters to family, or casting mail-in ballots. [3]   we must act NOW to nip this in the bud. If you agree we can’t tolerate any disruption to this crucial public good, join me today in telling Congress: Protect our Postal Service from Trump’s takeover >> SIGN THE PETITION Trump and DeJoy have al...
