An unlawful, cruel assault on marginalized people

Image
This week while the Supreme Court heard arguments for  Medina vs. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic,  I stood on the steps of the Court to call out Republicans’ coordinated attacks on health care and Medicaid. Now as we get into it, let me start by saying: This entire case is an unlawful, unjust, and cruel assault on Black women, people of color, and other vulnerable people who get their health care through Medicaid. The case began in 2018, when South Carolina’s governor tried to ban Medicaid patients from getting their health care from Planned Parenthood. Now, this Supreme Court decision could keep people who use Medicaid from visiting Planned Parenthood for essential, routine care — care that has nothing to do with abortion, I might add. That’s birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, wellness exams. This case is an assault on low-income folks, the LGBTQIA+ community, people with disabilities, and those in rural and underserved communities. All peo...

Our campaign was just featured in The Washington Post!

Image
I wanted to reach out personally to share that our campaign was featured in  The Washington Post  today!    Everyone is looking for answers for how to respond to this administration, and in time, what we need to do to win back the House.  Here’s my take: we need to talk about real things, with a real agenda to improve people’s lives. We can’t just be against the things we don’t like. We need a positive vision for how we will address the challenges working families face. We need to talk about Americans being able to work just one job and build a middle-class life, lowering the costs of child care and prescription drugs, protecting fundamental rights, and making sure everyone can access quality, affordable health care. We have the ideas – we need to run on them and then get them done. That’s what our campaign is about. That’s why we won a district that Donald Trump carried by two points. And I’m so heartened to see people taking notice. But our work is far ...

Publisher's Roundup, 10

Publisher's Roundup, 10 Trump is Lashing Out Because He’s Losing Norman Eisen Mar 22 Friday was a surreal split screen for me. On the one hand, press coverage was dominated  by the capitulation to Donald Trump  of what was heretofore one of our nation’s finest and heretofore most courageous law firms, Paul Weiss . In one form or another, I’ve worked closely with them for years, and as one very senior public official asked me, “What the f**k?” The other side of the split screen was the latest salvo in Trump’s attacks on me. Throughout the day, reporters and others reached out to alert me that Trump was about to make another move against me in retaliation for my legal fights against him. I replied that I would not yield, no matter what Trump had planned, then proved it by   filing with wonderful partners my latest lawsuit  against his administration to reverse the shuttering of Voice of America. By the time   Trump’s Executive Order with my name in it   arriv...
