How cutting-edge tech revealed a 150-year-old secret

  Last year, a first-of-its-kind expedition took place in the newly designated Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. It was also one of the biggest dive expeditions ever completed in the Great Lakes.  Using a cutting-edge, remotely operated vehicle and 3-D imaging technology, scientists and maritime archaeologists documented 17 shipwrecks in Lake Ontario NMS preserved by cold freshwater. One of the wrecks revealed was a never-before-seen 19th-century schooner over 600 feet beneath the surface.  This educational mission was live-broadcast directly from the ship, giving the public a chance to dive into our shared maritime heritage and be among the first to see this 150-year-old marvel. Thousands of viewers — including hundreds of students — were able to experience this historic event in real time.
