Donald Trump has used the opening weekend of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations to praise the US military and critique democratic socialists, warning of a “communist menace” that he claims poses a major threat to the country. “There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life,” the president said, calling communism “the enemy of the Constitution”. He labelled the rise of democratic socialists the “greatest threat to our country since its founding”, comparing the movement’s potential impact with World War II and the September 11 attacks.

In a speech marking America’s 250th anniversary, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani rejected President Donald Trump’s view of the nation, and especially of its immigrants, without naming him directly. Mamdani criticized Trump’s immigration policies from City Hall while sitting behind a desk that once belonged to George Washington and flanked by recently naturalized U.S. citizens, rebuking the view held by “the powerful” that America “becomes less the more people it welcomes.” “America, they will tell you, belongs only to those with the right accent or the right shade of skin. The re st of us, they insist, should be grateful for merely being allowed to visit. How small they are. How weak, how unoriginal,” the mayor said. “The irony” of American exceptionalism, he said, was that the country’s history was often written “by those who were told by others with power and influence and wealth that they were anything but exceptional.”

According to tracking site PowerOutage, over 842,000 homes are without power across states in the Midwest and Northeast that have been impacted by severe weather and extreme heat. That number, which will fluctuate throughout the day as crews work to restore power, is for households, meaning that the number of people impacted by these outages is likely to be much larger.

Leaked documents show Trump's extravagent firework show will be a public health disaster

As the Post reported on Wednesday, internal NPS models project that Trump’s plan to launch an estimated 850,000 fireworks over a 40-minute span on Saturday will lead to “very unhealthy” air quality throughout downtown Washington, DC, Arlington, and the area around Capitol Hill. NPS’ internal report recommends that residents “wear an N95 mask when outdoors” and “remain indoors as much as possible during and after the show.” George Thurston, a professor of medicine and population health at New York University, said that the amount of pollution projected by the NPS is so severe that people should “minimize exposures” to outdoor air during the fireworks show, while adding that wearing “an N95 mask would be a good idea.”
