Little April

From its inception, Represent Justice believed that in order to bring more people proximate to the issues in our justice system, we need to empower, uplift and listen to the voices of those who’ve been most-impacted by the system.

That's how we create change, and that’s the approach we've taken to storytelling.

By creating with and centering those directly impacted by incarceration in our storytelling, these pieces build narrative power for leaders and advocates in the space, and provide opportunities to generate meaningful change in their communities.

We’re currently co-producing content alongside Represent Justice’s system-impacted Ambassadors that focuses on telling their stories, highlighting key problems in our system, and educating and engaging audiences.

We’re proud to announce our first piece of original content, Little April, is coming September 8th—take a quick look at the teaser right now.

Little April is a short film co-produced by Represent Justice and Represent Justice Ambassador Alumni April Grayson. April, like 90% of youth who come to be involved in the justice system, has had prior traumatic experiences. April was born into the foster care system and was placed in households and spaces where she was abused and mistreated by those entrusted with her safety and wellbeing.

April was on her own at 19, with no support system and very few economic opportunities. At just 20, and a victim of trafficking, she was arrested and spent the next 17 years in prison.

There were so many points in April’s life where an adult could have intervened and changed her path for the better. But she was never given that love, care, and safety that every child deserves.

By imagining a reality where our youth are nurtured instead of penalized, Little April is a powerful depiction of how these systems impact the lives of young Black girls and boys, and offers an opening into opportunities for transformation.

Please, take a moment right now to watch the Little April teaser, and then share it with your friends and family on social media.

Thanks,
Gretel
