Melat’s story

COLORADO - A RACE THAT HASN'T RECEIVED AS MUCH ATTENTION AS IT

SHOULD...MELAT KIROS FOR CONGRESS!

Justice Democrats

Justice Democrats-endorsed candidate Melat Kiros is making waves and shaking up the political establishment in Denver:

Headline from The Denver Post;'A young Democrat stunned Rep. Diana DeGette in a party vote. Against the odds, Melat Kiros is gunning for a primary win: In challnge of veteran congresswoman, 28-year-old says 'Denver Democrats want a fighter''

Melat surged to prominence after defeating 30-year incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette at the Denver County Democratic Assembly  earning 63% of the vote and handing Degette her first assembly loss since 1996.

While the assembly doesn’t decide the primary, moments like this don’t happen by accident. They point to something real: momentum.

A growing number of voters are looking for a different kind of Democrat — one who’s willing to challenge the status quo and actually fight for transformative change.

Melat is running to do exactly that. Help her win with a grassroots donation now!

She said it herself: “We hear politicians say over and over that we need bold leadership, progress, and change. We’ve heard this for years. Decades. But they never deliver.”

She’s running to change that, fueled by the story that got her here.

Melat was born in Ethiopia and raised in Denver after immigrating with her family as a baby. After college and law school, she was on her way to build a career as an attorney.

But after speaking out against Israel’s genocide against Palestinians and law firms’ targeting pro-Palesinian protesters, Melat lost her job — a turning point that pushed her towards public service and a deeper commitment to reforming a political system she believes isn’t working for everyday people.

Today, when she’s not on the campaign trail, she works as a barista, so she knows firsthand what it’s like to be a service industry worker at a time when working-class folks are struggling to get by as corporate profits soar.

Melat’s campaign is centered on bold, structural change, focusing on:

  • Medicare for All;
  • Universal childcare;
  • Publicly financed elections to reduce the influence of big money.

And she’s prepared to hold her own party accountable to deliver, which is exactly why Justice Democrats is proud to support her.

But taking on a longtime incumbent backed by the establishment means Melat needs a surge of grassroots support to keep building on her momentum and stay competitive. That’s where you come in.
