Marjorie Taylor Greene shreds Pete Hegseth’s reaction to Iran killing 2 US troops
The former Georgia congresswoman finally had enough of the Trump administration's "oh God how could this happen war is terrible no way to avoid this" response to the deaths of US servicemembers in a war that they started and then restarted because Trump couldn't bear the humiliation of having someone else dictate the terms for once. After two more US servicemembers were killed in a missile strike on a US base in Jordan, Hegseth wrote on Twitter "Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.” Infuriating, meaningless platitudes.
MTG responded with “Sacrifice?? What the fuck are you talking about?? They did not willingly sacrifice themselves. They were killed because of the war you, Trump, and the admin, are waging on behalf of a FOREIGN COUNTRY, Israel.” We don't agree with MTG on very much, but we definitely share her frustration with the Trump administration, its incessant bloodlust, and their complete refusal to take any responsibility for the consequences of their warmongering.

Unable to accept defeat, Donald Trump presses on in Iran
Jacobin, Arron Reza Merat: "The symbolism was hard to miss. Tens of millions of people on the streets in cities across Iran and Iraq trying to catch a sight of Ali Khamenei’s coffin during his weeklong funeral. Khamenei had been Iran’s supreme leader for almost four decades until his February 28 assassination by Israel on the first day of the US-led war. In the run-up to America’s and Israel’s war on Iran, Donald Trump, sounding very much like George W. Bush, suggested that his bombing campaign would be welcomed by the Iranian people. But the very crowds the Trump administration had expected to overthrow the regime instead turned out to honor it. Meanwhile, Trump, unpopular and neurotic about crowd sizes at his own events, spent the week pressuring FIFA to reverse a US player’s red card, branding Iranians as 'scum,' and launching a fresh and ongoing bombing campaign in southern Iran.
Iran established the Persian Gulf Strait Authority to manage the passage of shipping through the strait by inviting shipping companies to register details online and await approval. But the United States has also sought to establish a “southern corridor” through the strait’s Omani waters, defended by the US Navy, which, if consolidated, would deprive Tehran of its major leverage over the global economy and therefore the United States. Concerned over the threat to its leverage in future negotiations with the United States, both over its nuclear program and the presence of US military assets in the region, Iran attacked, citing a violation of the MOU.
US military infrastructure in the Persian Gulf and Jordan is in ruins following thirty-nine days of intense fighting, which drew to a close with the ceasefire on April 7. Trump appears to be incapable of accepting this reality, which he must do to guarantee any lasting peace. Trump’s refusal to engage with the material reality he has created means that it is likely the United States and Iran will remain in an ambiguous state between war and peace for the foreseeable future.
Tehran saw off attacks by two nuclear powers and now has the ability to control the flow of vital commodities, and therefore create inflationary spirals in Europe and the United States. Politicians in Iran frame the war as existential and pursue tactics that deprive its enemies the stability they took from it. Global oil inventories, including those in the United States, are nearly empty, as Trump himself said three weeks ago when he signed the MOU.
Trump may not wish to deal with Iran, but it is clear after months of war that he has no other choice."

ICE’s violence is no accident. It’s part of the job
The New Republic, Melissa Gira Grant: "Two years into Donald Trump’s campaign of mass deportations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups so often result in violence that if you look away from social media or the news for a few hours, you may miss another death. On Monday, ICE agents killed Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old man from Colombia, after stopping his car in Biddleford, Maine. Durán Guerrero was the second person shot and killed by immigration enforcement agents in one week: Last Tuesday, in Houston, Texas, also in the course of an apparent traffic stop, an agent killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old father from Mexico who had lived in the United States for decades.
Department of Homeland Security officials offered only a slight variation in their excuses for taking these lives. Initially, they claimed that both Durán Guerrero and Salgado Araujo had 'weaponized' their vehicles against agents. This type of rationalization has become painfully routine in immigration enforcement. The only new thing about these excuses was how quickly they were doubted and discounted by the media and the public alike.
That same day, in St. Augustine, Florida, another man was dead after an ICE 'encounter.' In this case, four people fled their car when they spotted ICE. A truck hit and killed one of them, a 28-year-old man from Mexico.
Americans have been primed to accept that violence, because at all levels of law enforcement in this country, officers enjoy impunity both for racial profiling and for killing people. What has changed, what has escalated, is that the White House is now openly telling us that this not a broken system but a system it permits and prefers. Our everyday lives are now occupied by a secretive law enforcement agency that is empowered to round up people profiled as immigrants based on their race or ethnicity, a form of racial profiling given license by the Supreme Court. These are federal agents who kill and face no consequences, and are led by people pushing an ethnic cleansing campaign. These killings are simply part of that job."

When Trump accuses others of wrongdoing, you can bet he’s up to something himself

As prices rise and the US’s reputation tanks, Trump is building self-serving monuments and putting his face on new $1 coins to ensure he leaves a lasting legacy. Don’t worry, Donald, we’ll never forget you! Your name will forever be associated with corruption, crime and a nationwide outbreak of explosive diarrhea. When the going gets tough, Trump tends to go into full-on victim mode. This week was no exception. On Thursday, the president gave a televised primetime speech in which he rehashed all his usual grievances. A random jab about trans people? Check. Boasting about how he’s single-handedly made America great again? Check. Demonizing the media? Check. Complaints about how unfair it was he lost to Joe Biden in 2020 coupled with accusations about Chinese interference and misinformation about election integrity? Check. 'No country can be great without fair and honest elections,' Trump announced. 'If there can be no trust, there can be no greatness. Unfortunately, the system we have falls catastrophically short of that standard.'
Trump’s claims about the electoral system being compromised aren’t just false: they’re a calculated attempt to undermine future elections. Trump is a master of projection. Whenever he accuses others of wrongdoing, you can bet that it’s because he’s up to something himself. As numerous Democrats and voting rights groups are warning, the president appears to be laying the groundwork to interfere with the upcoming midterms. Trump has made it clear that he will do whatever it takes to ensure Maga doesn’t lose an election for 'a hundred years.' We should take him at his word."
