Last night, Michigan held its primaries. Michiganders turned out in record-breaking numbers for an August primary — more than a million ballots cast, surpassing every August primary in the state's history. On a summer Tuesday, with no presidential race on the ballot, people showed up. That is what a healthy democracy looks like. In November, that display of democracy will be tested. Michigan is home to some of the largest and most vibrant immigrant communities in the country — in Detroit, in Dearborn, in Hamtramck, across Wayne County and far beyond. And this year, those communities are living under a shadow: a relentless ICE crackdown that has made ordinary people afraid to go about their daily lives. Afraid of a traffic stop. Afraid of who might be waiting outside a workplace, a courthouse, or a polling place. That fear is the most effective form of voter suppression there is. You don't need to post an agent at every precinct to keep people from voting. You just need them afraid enough to stay home. And a democracy where entire communities are too frightened to cast a ballot is not the one Michiganders showed up for last night. That is exactly why Michigan is one of the six battleground states where we are building Operation: Vote Safe. We just hired our State Director for Michigan to ensure that, in November, every eligible voter can show up without fear, as they did last night. We will bring on organizers, veterans, and faith leaders who can look their neighbors in the eye and say, with authority, you have every right to vote, and we will be right there with you when you do. But that presence has to be built now, before a single midterm vote is cast. And it takes resources we are still raising. Michigan showed up last night. Let's make sure that in November, nothing and no one can frighten them away from doing it again. Steve Schmidt Save America Movement
