Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., questioned former special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday in a hearing focused on Smith’s investigations into President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and role in the Jan. 6 attack. The hearing is the career prosecutor’s second public appearance before the Republican-led Congress over the investigations, which had led to unprecedented indictments. Both were scuttled after Trump’s reelection, as Department of Justice policy prevents prosecution of a sitting president. Republicans and the president have accused Smith of pursuing a politically motivated case against the president. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, referred Smith to the Justice Department for possible prosecution, alleging that Smith made false statements during an hourslong closed-door meeting with lawmakers in December. Smith has denied accusations of bias, saying he had "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" of what his investigations laid out. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage.   LAST 2 WEEKS IN REVIEW I’m your Representative in Congress and I write to keep you informed. The chaos and costs of Trump’s tariff strategy A junior varsity national security team  No one is above the law, or below it  Big ideas to govern better Hitting back on behalf of scientists Meeting with constituents in the MA-04   The chaos and costs of Trump’s tariff strategy   WSJ’s “dumbest trade war in history”:  The president announced sweeping tariffs this week, which amount to a $500+ billion tax hike on everyday Americans. The tariffs were calculated  nonsensically  and communicated incoherently. There is robust debate between policymakers and economists about how tariffs might help America, but every serious participant in that debate recognizes that the chaos of this tariff roll-out will cause pain for businesses, families, and allies alike.  I have often joined the tariff debate, generally arguing for free trade with the exception of Chin...

POLITICO Nightly: Tesla’s Elon Musk problem

Image
By  Charlie Mahtesian  and  Calder McHugh Presented by  Elon Musk speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House today. | Al Drago/Bloomberg BEAR MARKET  — You wouldn’t know it from the frenetic, high profile he currently cuts in Washington, but tech mogul Elon Musk has  lost more than $100 billion in net worth  since mid-December. In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election, the share price of the high-flying electric car company he leads, Tesla, climbed to a high of roughly $480 per share. But it has since cratered to under $300. Shares dropped another 4 percent today, to close at $290.80 per share. For Musk, the world’s richest man and Tesla’s largest shareholder, those are just paper losses. He owns and runs several other companies — among them SpaceX, Twitter, and artificial intelligence startup xAI — so Tesla’s recent decline is just a flesh wound. But the largely parallel timeline between Tesla’s nosedive and Musk’s rise as something ...
