SSA deadline Friday: don’t let ICE weaponize Social Security data

 

We are down to the wire. This Friday, the public comment period closes on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) dangerous data-sharing proposal with the Department of Homeland Security. We need to make our voices heard now and give the SSA a clear “NO” from the people they’re supposed to serve.

Together, our community and allies have already submitted more than 40,000 public comments opposing this plan. That’s powerful – but with so much at stake, it’s not enough. Take Action >> Here’s a quick play-by-play on why this is so serious: As we speak, the administration is trying to supercharge its deportation tools by turning government databases that were meant to help people into weapons against them. DHS’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database already tracks immigrants and is being used to target our neighbors, feed the ICE deportation machine, and flag people for wrongful voter purges; States are using SAVE to question the citizenship of eligible voters and to justify purging voter rolls; Now SSA wants to funnel even more Social Security data into this system, giving ICE and other agencies an even larger surveillance net to track, target, and deport immigrants – including long-time residents and families.
