The truth about leather

Leather is durable. It’s attractive. And it’s in many items we use daily: shoes, belts, purses, wallets, and jackets to start. But, as Green America discovered when looking into leather production in Bangladesh, it’s also frequently made with toxic chemicals and child labor. And it’s not just Bangladesh, researchers are finding major problems – from destruction of the Amazon to animal abuse – in leather production around the world. And many vegan leathers are not much better, starting with, you guessed it, nasty chemicals and labor abuses. Corporations that are raking in profits bear the greatest responsibility for ensuring that workers, consumers, communities and the environment are protected from the creation of leather and leather alternatives. But they often fail in that role. That’s why Green America is urging corporations to clean up their act. In the meantime, as consumers, we can use our purchases to support more responsible leather and alternative leather products, including certified Green Business Network Member OOLOOP. From tips for purchasing real leather to finding the latest plant-based options, we have suggestions to keep you looking stylish while protecting people and the planet. |
