Today we’re pleased to share CommonWealth Beacon’s 2025 Impact Report, a snapshot of the journalism and community engagement that defined our year.


In 2025, our newsroom committed to deeper, more comprehensive reporting from communities across Massachusetts. From coverage of how a hospital maternity unit closure reshaped daily life in Central Massachusetts to in-depth reporting on housing, climate, and local economic development, our focus was clear: explain how policy decisions affect people in cities and towns across the state.

The report includes key milestones and growth metrics, but the real impact shows up in the responses we heard from readers. Time and again, our stories sparked conversation, elevated overlooked issues, and helped communities better understand the challenges they face.


As we mark our 30th anniversary, this work feels especially important. We’re proud to carry forward a legacy of independent, nonpartisan journalism that informs the public and strengthens civic life across the Commonwealth.

The Three Huge Lies Trump is Telling Republican Senators about his Medicaid Cuts — to finance a big tax cut mostly for the wealthy Robert Reich Jun 3 Friends, Trump is busily working the Senate this week in an effort to get his Big Ugly Bill across the finish line. Given the Republican’s close margin in the Senate, he can afford to lose only three Republican senators. But Republican senators don’t like the idea of cutting Medicaid — many of their constituents depend on it — and they’re balking at the huge deficit-busting price tag (which, of course, includes a giant tax cut mostly for the wealthy).
