House Speaker Mike Johnson just branded his political opponents as “communists” — and then suggested the U.S. military should be used against them here at home.
While pushing a massive new Pentagon funding package, Johnson claimed the military needs resources for “fighting communism on our own shores.”
That language is right out of the Red Scare. And in Trump’s America, it's terrifying.
We have seen what happens when politicians turn dissent into an enemy. The last Red Scare ruined lives, targeted unions, smeared civil rights leaders, chilled free speech, and treated ordinary Americans as threats. Congress cannot let Johnson and Trump drag us back there.
Tell Congress: Reject any Pentagon funding package tied to Johnson’s Red Scare fearmongering and protect Americans’ right to dissent.
Trump and his allies are already targeting immigrants, protesters, democratic socialists, and anyone they label the “enemy within.” Johnson’s comments pour gasoline on that fire.
And Congress is being asked to fund this vision right now.
The U.S. military exists to defend the country — not to intimidate protesters, target political movements, chill organizing, or help MAGA politicians threaten their opponents.
Congress controls military funding. That means Congress has a duty to make sure not one dollar is used to enable domestic political repression.
If Johnson wants more Pentagon money, lawmakers must demand answers. What does he mean by “fighting communism on our own shores?" What safeguards will stop these funds from being used against lawful protest? And why should Americans trust politicians who keep calling their opponents enemies?
Add your name now and tell Congress: No blank check for Speaker Johnson’s Red Scare. Protect free speech, lawful protest, political organizing, and the right to dissent.
