On Tuesday, MAGA Republicans in the U.S. Senate proposed legislation that would funnel a billion dollars from American taxpayers into Donald Trump’s vanity ballroom.*
Just a few points (among many we could make):
- The ballroom is unlawful. First, the East Wing of the White House was illegally demolished to make room for the ballroom. Second, construction of the ballroom was begun without the required authorization.
- It is also absurdly oversized. At a planned 90,000 square feet, the ballroom would be big enough for a regulation NFL football field. Plus an NHL ice rink. Plus three NBA/WNBA basketball courts. With room to spare.
- Trump initially said the ballroom would cost $200 million. Then $300 million. Then $400 million. Now, apparently, it has ballooned to a full billion.
- Not to worry, though. Trump, and others in his regime, have repeatedly insisted that the ballroom would be paid for entirely by private donations and would not cost taxpayers a dime. (As if giving billionaires and Big Business another way to pay tribute to Trump is a good thing.)
- But now Senate Republicans want to give Trump $1,000,000,000 of our tax dollars to erect his monstrous ballroom.
This billion-dollar ballroom boondoggle must now be voted on by the full Senate and House of Representatives.

The American people have real needs. A gaudy, gargantuan ballroom for billionaires and Big Business is most definitely not one of them. Do not approve any taxpayer money — not $1, much less $1,000,000,000 — for Donald Trump’s vanity ballroom.

*They also proposed another $70 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — the two agencies most notorious for carrying out the Trump regime’s racist, murderous immigration “policies.”
