State records show Deaton was on the Rhode Island voter rolls as an independent before his registration was cancelled Feb. 14 due to his change of residency. He is listed as having voted only three times since registering in Rhode Island two decades ago, casting ballots in the 2020, 2008 and 2004 general elections.

In 2017, the retailer Claire’s was forced to pull some children’s makeup off its shelves after Target 12 reported that tests ordered by Deaton’s law firm discovered asbestos in the products. He later raised concerns about the FDA’s lack of authority over cosmetics.

Separately, Deaton had a yearslong fight with Barrington officials over his 2017 arrest during an altercation with his girlfriend’s ex-husband. He has since sued the town in federal court, alleging police acted unlawfully. That suit remains in active in both state court and federal appeals court, according to Barrington Town Manager Philip Hervey.

A new WBUR report published today sheds troubling new light on Congressman Seth Moulton's financial interests and raises serious questions about why he has spent months delaying the release of information Massachusetts voters deserve to see before they cast their ballots. The report details how Moulton accumulated private stakes worth between $1 million - $5 million in companies tied to the defense sector while serving on the House Armed Services Committee – the very committee responsible for overseeing the industry and approving policies and spending that directly affect it. These were not ordinary investments available to the public. They were exclusive private deals that generated extraordinary returns while Moulton sat in a position of public trust. READ MORE Just as striking is Moulton's sudden reversal. Congressman Moulton began investing in these companies in 2021 and continued doing so for years while serving on the committee responsible for overseeing the industry in which they operate. During that time, he showed little interest in addressing the obvious questions these investments raised. It wasn't until he began gearing up for a Senate campaign that he publicly commented on them, and even then his response was to defend the practice. In a September 2025 statement, he declared that he “cannot recuse myself from my constitutional duty to vote on matters coming before the House.” Only now, after reporters began asking questions and voters began paying attention, has Moulton reversed course. His campaign says he will place the assets in a blind trust and recuse himself from votes affecting those companies. After years of deflecting and then defending these investments, it's fair to ask why now? The investments didn't change. The committee didn't change. The only thing that changed is that Seth Moulton is now running for Senate.

That is what makes this episode so troubling. A member of Congress charged with overseeing the defense industry participated in exclusive private investment opportunities tied to that same industry, defended those arrangements for years, and only moved to address the issue after it became a public controversy. Yet voters still do not know the full extent of Moulton's financial interests. He has delayed filing both his financial disclosure report and tax returns, leaving Massachusetts voters without information they should have before they begin casting ballots. Public trust is built on transparency and accountability. It requires leaders to confront potential conflicts of interests before they become public controversies, not scramble to address them after they've been uncovered. Better yet, it requires the judgment to avoid those conflicts altogether and the integrity to hold oneself to the highest standards the public deserves. At every step, Congressman Moulton's response has followed the same pattern: deny there is a problem, delay transparency, and change course only when public pressure becomes impossible to ignore. That may be a political strategy, but it is not the standard Massachusetts voters should expect from someone seeking a seat in the United States Senate. The people of Massachusetts deserve better. Ed Markey on Wednesday, explicitly painting the long-time incumbent as “too old” in comments to the Washington Post. Markey, 79, has served in Congress since winning a House seat in 1976, though it wasn’t until 2013 that he earned a promotion to the upper chamber in a special election to replace John Kerry, who resigned to become Barack Obama’s secretary of state. During his long career, Markey has established himself as an outspoken liberal and has focused heavily on combating climate change. After a desultory few months in which he didn’t qualify for any debates, he abandoned ship. In announcing his latest bid, Moulton leaned heavily into the age gap between the two candidates in his launch video. “We’re in a crisis, and with everything we learned last election, I just don’t believe Sen. Markey should be running for another six-year term at 80 years old,” he said. “Even more, I don’t think someone who’s been in Congress for half a century is the right person to meet this moment and win the future.” (Markey will turn 80 next year.) BOSTON - Rep. Seth Moulton is defending controversial remarks that he made about transgender athletes in the wake of the presidential election.

President-elect Donald Trump's campaign spent millions on anti-trans political ads this fall. The Massachusetts Congressman told The New York Times after Trump's win that "Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone" and called for a new approach from the party on the transgender issues.

"I have two little girls, I don't want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I'm supposed to be afraid to say that," Moulton told The Times.

The Boston Globe reported that a top aide to Moulton resigned after his comments appeared in The Times, and there were protests outside his Salem office.
