“Is that actually true?”

Has this happened to you? Someone sends you a claim about a new state law, or a number about housing costs, or a statistic about the T. It sounds plausible. It might even be true. But confirming it takes time you don't have.

Luckily, we’ve got your back.

CommonWealth Beacon is the first Massachusetts newsroom to partner with Gigafact, a national network that includes award-winning statewide newsrooms like MinnPost, Wisconsin Watch and Connecticut Mirror. The signature product is the Fact Brief: a rigorously researched, 150-word answer to a question that's circulating online and ripe for misinterpretation. Starting this fall, we aim to publish two a week, roughly 100 in the first year, on housing, education, transportation, health care, climate, and the politics behind all of it.

Support the launch

Here's why we're doing it. This newsroom is built on 30 years of deep, patient reporting, and that work matters more than ever. But it isn't what someone needs at 9 p.m. when a claim lands in a group chat. Fact Briefs meet a different moment with the same standards, and they're built to cut through the noise.

Launching something like this takes editorial time, oversight, and the tools to distribute it well. Reader support is what lets us say yes.
