Brian Kemp: Still the Voter Suppressor In Chief

Brian Kemp may be on his way out the door — but he isn’t done beefing up his legacy as Voter Suppressor in Chief.

As Governor of Georgia and, previously, as our state’s top elections official, he’s severely restricted access to the ballot box and worked to weaken the voting power of Black and brown communities.

We know why he’s scared of truly free and fair elections: he’s afraid of the power that we, the people — all the people — hold in our democracy. Keep scrolling for a recap of how Brian Kemp has targeted Black and brown voters — and chip in now to fight back for the freedom to vote.

Vote Suppressor in Chief Brian Kemp

NEW: Brian Kemp called a special session on the eve of this Juneteenth to rig Georgia’s voting maps and erase fair representation for Black and brown voters. We mobilized Georgians to speak out against this move, and lawmakers backed down, but Brian Kemp still supports map-rigging and may try again after the November elections.

He told Republicans they had to stop "all these minority voters" from registering and voting.

He signed SB 202 into law — one of the most egregious pieces of voter suppression legislation in the country. Data shows it’s had a larger impact on Black voters than white voters. He held the signing ceremony while sitting under a painting of a slave plantation, and admitted he supported the legislation because he was “frustrated” with the 2020 election results.

On his watch, Georgia closed a higher percentage of polling locations than any other state. Black Georgians made up a significant percentage of the population in several of the top counties where polls were closed.

He sent armed investigators to Black neighborhoods after local organizers flipped the majority-white school board.

He oversaw the cancellation of more than 1.4 million voter registrations — low-income and minority Georgians were most likely to be impacted.

❌ He put 53,000 voter registrations on hold just before the 2018 elections under "exact match." Nearly 70% were Black voters. He went on to win the 2018 governor's race over Stacey Abrams by approximately 55,000 votes.

Even on his way out of office, Brian Kemp is clearly still intent on suppressing Black and brown political power. And he represents an anti-voter faction that will continue trying to block access to the ballot box.

At Fair Fight Action, we organize against attacks on our democracy. We prevent and mitigate the effects of voter suppression. We make sure voters have the information they need on how to cast their ballots. And we count on grassroots support to power this work.
