While Trump dismantles democracy map by map, Maryland was supposed to fight back. They had the bill. They had the votes. One Democrat stood in the way.

Bill Ferguson, a 16-year incumbent and Maryland’s current Senate President, killed Maryland’s redistricting bill. That bill was set to deliver an additional Democrat to Washington. A Democrat that would replace one of Trump’s strongest allies in Congress, Andy Harris.

Ferguson is part of a familiar pattern — the Democrat who had the power to fight and didn’t.

In Maryland, Ferguson stalled reproductive rights legislation until public pressure made delay impossible. He blocked protections for immigrant families from Trump’s ICE — TWICE. He protected data center tax breaks while working families struggled with utility bills. After Ferguson stonewalled redistricting, Governor Wes Moore declined to endorse him.

Ferguson’s inaction not only earned him the title “Most Hated Democrat in America” by the Bulwark - it earned him a primary opponent.

Enter Bobby LaPin.


Army veteran. Former Baltimore schoolteacher. Volunteer firefighter. A small business owner whose office is a sailboat and who has helped to organize protests against Trump with an iPhone and an Instagram account (@makegoodchange).

People in Baltimore call him Captain Bobby. Born near the docks of South Baltimore and raised by a single mother who taught him the essentials to live by – be kind, be helpful, and don’t let the bastards get you down.

Captain Bobby isn’t a politician. He’s what happens when regular people run out of patience and the kind of Democrat this historical moment is demanding.

Bobby’s victory over one of the most entrenched figures in Maryland state politics would send a message that echoes far beyond the state’s borders. That message is Democrats Must Stand Up Against Trump or be replaced.

If you believe Democrats should do everything in their power to stand up to Donald Trump, Bobby urgently needs you to chip in to help him win.

The stakes go beyond one state senate seat. It’s about redistricting Maryland to save our democracy and electing the right type of Democrats who will do it.
