The Sound of Music’
‘The Sound of Music’A Reason To SmileThe hills are alive again with the sound of music. The beloved movie musical, “The Sound of Music,” is celebrating its 60th anniversary with much fanfare. It is this week’s reason to smile. To commemorate the anniversary, a newly restored and digitally remastered version of the film had a theatrical release in September. You can see and hear for yourself in the beautifully updated “Do-Re-Mi,” as Julie Andrews teaches her charges to sing. If you’d like to see the entire remastered film, it is available on Disney+, Amazon Prime and Hulu, among other streaming services. If you prefer seeing the “Sound of Music” live, the 60th anniversary celebrations also include an 80-city stage tour across North America that extends into 2026. A cache of rarely seen, behind-the-scenes photos was also released as part of the anniversary. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, based on their own stage play, is considered one of the greatest films of all time. It tells the story of a young governess sent to care for the seven von Trapp children in pre-World War II Austria. Maria and Captain von Trapp fall in love and marry just before the whole family escapes the Nazis across the Alps. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was the highest grossing movie of all time, a title it held for five years. And a very happy birthday to Julie Andrews, who just turned 90 years young.
